Meeting Reports 2021-22

    Speakers Night

Alex really came up trumps on his debut as Chairman - well done!

David ingeniously linked salads to global transportation while Carolyn argued that money, not love, makes the world go round. Stephen 'drummed-up' support for his dream job (drumming) and Maura persuaded us to go for things that are good for us (real or virtual) and convinced us that 70% chocolate is one of them (thank you!).

Peter gave a background to impromptu speaking in his education speech and then chaired a challenging Topics session all about emotions - were we 'anxious' or 'elated'?

    The
Bill Murray Cup was awarded to Peter Sinnott.

    Speakers Night

We had two maiden speeches from two new members - Shamiso recalled her journey from Zimbabwe to the Midlands, while Ryan recalled his journey from Edinburgh to becoming an RAF officer. Sher awakened us to mindfulness and Stephen tempted us with food and drink.

Brian introduced his Education Speech about 'gestures' by setting the scene at Bonfire Night.

Alex challenged us during topics to recall the best advice we had ever received.

    The
Bill Murray Cup was awarded to Sher Khan.

    Speakers Night

Sian continued her speaking progress with a reasoned and convincing account of why social media is evil, while Peter recalled a couple of near-crash experiences on airliners. In contrast Petula gave us some examples of the language of love.

Carolyn gave us all some insights into how we can use our notes when speaking.

Brian showed what a kind person he is by letting members write down their own topic on cards … and then showed that he can be devious by shuffling the cards and allocating the topics at random … nasty!

    The
Bill Murray Cup was awarded to Petula Nurse.

Speeches from contrasting ends of our speaking spectrum tonight: Stephen and David gave us their introductory speeches, while Alex was successful in his certification speech and was awarded our WSC Certificate in Public speaking. He is now ready to embark on our advanced exercises.

    Speakers Night

A really good meeting tonight. We continued with a couple of demonstration speeches and Sian wowed us with her first speech and a good Topic. As well as Sian's introductory speech we heard about the art of selling and struggles with gold, silver and bronze.

Maura tested us with a brilliant topics session using song titles and Peter emphasised the importance of the 4 P's (Pitch, Pace, Pause. Pronunciation).

    The
Bill Murray Cup was awarded to Sian Francis.

    Welcome and Demonstration Evening

Our first face-to-face meeting since before the pandemic! Our President Carolyn welcomed us to our first meeting at our new venue, and we're sure we will feel at home there.

The meeting was a Demonstration Evening with three speeches by experienced members to get us back in the swing and to show our visitors what we do. Brian extolled the virtues of paper, Maura enthralled us with her tales of mistaken identity and Peter looked at how children are named.

Debbie reviewed what we offer - for the benefit of our visitors - and Tracey invited us to take well-known person to a food venue and discuss matters of interest with them over a meal.

    The
Bill Murray Cup was awarded to Peter Sinnott.
